Home for the Holidays

The changing color on the trees, the cool crispness in the air and holidays with loved ones are all my favorite things.  It is also one of the busiest times for families and senior advisors.  As we gather together to celebrate and see our families during the holiday season, it is a good opportunity to take a moment to assess any changes in our loved ones that have gone overlooked.  We live very busy lives and it can be difficult to pay attention to subtle changes in a senior’s day to day condition or to detect growing needs over the phone.   I advise families to take a moment around the kitchen table and check in with their parents on any challenges that they may be facing.  It is important to be sensitive and show respect, and in a loving manner, express your desire to help with any problems while visiting.

Here are some areas of concerns:

*Changes in eating habits or weight loss?

*Neglected personal hygiene, dirty clothes, and unkempt hair?

*Home is not as clean as usual or spoiled food in the refrigerator?

*Exhibiting forgetfulness, unopened mail, medication not taken, or bills unpaid?

*More quiet than usual, easily overwhelmed or tired by company?

It is very tempting and easy to go online and search for help and advice but be very careful about online registrations. Unlike regulated healthcare providers, online placement agencies and senior care communities are not obligated or legally bound to protect your privacy. In fact, more and more clients are telling us that they are being inundated with sales calls and emails after mistakenly giving out their contact information. Avoid filling out any and all forms! Senior Provisions promises to never share contact information without your knowledge or permission!

The holidays are a great time to reconnect and enjoy being a family, but it is also a good time to slow down and the senior around you is having any struggles.  Be observant and if you see any warning signs, please reach out to us for help and advice.  Senior Provisions wishes everyone a joyful and safe holiday season!

We are GRATEFUL for You!

The Senior Provision’s family wants to take a moment to say,

“Thank You” to our senior care providers. During this season of thanksgiving, we would like to acknowledge all the hard work and passion that you have invested into your community and staff this year.

Your deeds have not gone unnoticed. We noticed when you left your house before dawn to help get breakfast ready when your chef was ill. We noted how your families always feel like they can knock on your door. They know that you are listening and that you care. We were there when you greeted us and our client and asked what was important to them for their parent. We saw when you stopped in the middle of your busy day and talked to the lady down the hall looking a little lost. You always look ready for company and your team is smiling. Your residents are enjoying life and your staff is attentive, and we see it every day.

All of these things matter, and you show that they do. Thank you for your passion for providing great care and for your example of strong leadership.

May you and your family and entire team have a blessed and joyous Thanksgiving!

A Prayer for the Caregiver

by Bruce McIntyre

Unknown and often unnoticed,

you are a hero nonetheless.
For your love, sacrificial,

is God at his best.
You walk by faith in the darkness

of the great unknown,
And your courage, even in weakness,

gives life to your beloved.

You hold shaking hands

and provide the ultimate care:
Your presence, the knowing,

that you are simply there.
You rise to face the giant

of disease and despair,
It is your finest hour,

though you may be unaware.

You are resilient, amazing,

and beauty unexcelled,
You are the caregiver

and you have done well!

Helpful Resource

Plan in a Can Project

A “Plan in a Can” is a simple tool with an outstanding function.  It is a recycled tennis ball can that acts as the housing agent for vital health information and personalized necessities for an unplanned trip to the hospital.

If you have to call 911, what is the most important information EMS needs to know to provide you the best treatment before you get to the hospital? What personal items would you need when you get to the hospital?

Some examples could include:

Your Advance Directive

medications list

glasses

hearing aids

eye drops

phone charger

The “plan in a can” lets you personalize your health information and other important information and items you may need if you had to go to the hospital in the case of an emergency. Putting together a “Plan in a Can” and placing it on top of your refrigerator for EMS to easily find gives you a sense of peace.
